6 Questions You Should Ask Your Photographer

Royce Images Photography - Photographer York PA

  1. How long have you been a photographer?

The longer a photographer has been in business, the more likely it is that it’s not just a hobby for them.
My answer to this question: I’ve been actively pursuing photography since high school. I officially began my business in August of 2011 when it was time to grow from a amateur photographer to a professional photographer. I established my LLC in 2013, the business is officially registered, and I have a Pennsylvania sales tax license.

  2. Which types of photography do you specialize in?

It’s not uncommon for a photographer to specialize in several different types of photography as they often excel in a few genres.  For example, a photographer who specializes in family photography might be a good candidate to photograph your newborn because their style can translate between the genres.
My answer to this question: I specialize in weddings, families, newborns, high school senior, and business headshots. Each of these genres gives me the opportunity to work with people, which I love, and provide them with natural and realistic photos.

  3. Do you have many repeat clients?

This is a great test of not only the quality of a photographer’s work but of their customer service too.
My answer to this question: I have quite a few repeat clients that have been with me for several years. These repeat client have also referred their close family and friends because of the close relationships we have developed. The highest compliment I could EVER receive!

  4. What is your policy on rescheduling a session?

An experienced photographer will definitely have a policy in place when it comes to a client cancelling or rescheduling a photography session.  A photographer with policies indicates that they have experience with different types of clients and situations and have created policies accordingly.
My answer to this question: Depending on your type of session or event, that determines the rescheduling policy of my studio. Please inquire about my policy for your session when contracting with me.

  5. Have you had any experience with (name your specific concern)?

If you have any specific concerns regarding your photo session such as the photographer’s ability to work with a special needs child for example, find out if they have ever handled that type of situation before. Do not dismiss a photographer and their abilities based on their answers to your concerns. If given adequate notice, an experienced photographer should be able to deal with any situation you present them. This is the hallmark of a true pro.
My answer to this question: I have worked with many various types of situations and persons over the years. Each one deserves time, attention, and patience to capture the best photos possible. It is very pertinent for me to know if you or your family have a special situation for which I should plan ahead. I’m more than willing to work with you to give you peace of mind.

  6. Silent Question:

Use your gut to judge their personality and rapport. A photographer’s main job is to capture emotions and moments. If your photographer doesn’t mesh well with you on the phone or in person, chances are you and your family will not mesh well with them at your session and this will show in your photos.
My answer to this question: I tell this to my potential clients when we have a consultation, no matter whom you choose as your photographer for your session or event, make sure you choose a photographer whose body of work resonates with you AND a photographer whose personality coexists with your family or friends. Without those two ingredients, the session or event photos may not be the outcome you expected.

I do hope these six questions to ask your photographer and my personal answers in some way have helped you plan for your next photo session. I would be delighted to speak to you further, and in detail, about your session or event. I am here to help in any way that I can.
